Xavier Alonso bids farewell to Leverkusen fans after his final game at the BayArena, but it ended on a sour note with a 2-4 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

Spanish coach Xavier Alonso waved goodbye to Leverkusen fans after Sunday’s 4-2 home defeat to Borussia Dortmund, three years in charge of the Bayer Leverkusen side, which won the Bundesliga title unbeaten last season and the DFB-Pokal.

Alonso announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season on Friday.

It is widely expected Alonso will replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

The Spaniard joined Leverkusen in October 2022 and guided them to their first Bundesliga title and a DFB-Pokal triumph last season, losing only one game in all competitions. With that defeat coming in the Europa League final.

‘We’ve had so many special moments and it was a mixed feeling going into our last home game. We’re grateful for what we’ve achieved in the last three years.’

‘I have changed a lot over the years. We have experienced a lot. Fortunately, most of them are good. Today maybe not, but this time I will forget it soon. My life at Leverkusen was very special,’ Alonso said.
